The long process to choose America's presidential candidates got under way, in Iowa. Ted1 Cruz won the state's Republican caucuses2, upending Donald Trump3, who had led recent polling. Mr Trump came second, not far ahead of Marco Rubio, considered to be the viable4 moderate alternative to the populist front-runners. On the Democratic side Hillary Clinton eked5 out a win over Bernie Sanders by 0.3 of a percentage point, the thinnest- ever margin6 of victory in the party's Iowa caucuses.
