Weak consumer spending figures in the US are dampening hopes the country’s economic recovery will be quick. Household spending fell for the first time in five months in September, down 47 billion dollars or 0.5%. Government spending was behind the third quarter growth figure released on Thursday that saw the US officially exited recession.
Wall Street trade has been looking forward to the weekends with the market bottoming out on Friday, wiping out Thursday’s gains. All the major indices dropped over 2%. The Dow shed 250 points. And it was a painful day in Europe as well. Germany’s DAX led the way down, losing 3% over the day’s trade. It was a better end to the week in Australia though with both the majors up 1.5%.
The European Union’s released its negotiating position for the upcoming UN climate talks in Copenhagen. It estimates developing countries will need 160 billion dollars to cut greenhouse gases, but isn’t promising1 to fund that. Europe set a target for its own cuts of 30% by 2020.
And Apple's world takeover continues with the popular iPhone going on sale in the world’s biggest mobile phone marketplace China. The cheapest model will sell for just over 800 dollars.
