The Federal Opposition¹ Leader Tony Abbott will use today's front bench reshuffle to reward Coalition² MPs who spoke³ out against emissions⁴ trading. It comes a week after Mr. Abbott won a leadership's bill over Malcolm Turnbull. Liberal Senate Leader Nick Minchin is expected to take over the energy and resources portfolio⁵ from the emissions trading scheme negotiator Ian Macfarlane.

A former Indonesian soldier says the Australian newsmen known as the Balibo Five were shot deliberately⁶ in the 1975 Indonesian invasion of East Timor. Gatot Purwanto decided⁷ to speak out after seeing the Australian film Balibo which has been banned in Indonesia. He says the group's killing⁸ had been a rational decision to prevent word of the invasion leaking out.

Rising interest rates and unemployment are expected to curb⁹ retail¹⁰ sales growth next year according to independent forecaster Access Economics. It says sales earlier this year were solid thanks to the Federal Government's cash hand-outs.

And in Athens, youths have clashed with police on a second day of protests to mark the first anniversary of the fatal shooting of a teenager by police. Protesters threw stones as a 5000-strong crowd march to the city's Parliament. More than a dozen protesters were arrested, adding to the 400 who were arrested at the weekend.
