 A bounce in the polls is offering a glimmer¹ of hope for federal labor². Julia Gillard has regained³ her leader over Tony Abott as preferred prime minister. And labor's primary vote is up three points to 34%. Labor's poor result in the West Australia election has sparked renewed leadership speculation⁴.

 

Two U.S soilders have been shot dead in another so-called insider attack, several Afghan troops also died in the shooting at a remote military base near the capital Kabul. An Afghan police officer who opened fire on the troops was also shot dead.

 

A committal hearing will begin today for the man charged with murdering Melbourne woman Jill Meagher. Adrian Bayley is accused of raping⁵ and murdering the ABC employee after she left a bar in September last year. The hearing is expected to last to two days.
