 Former foreign minister Alexander Downer has taken a swipe at Indonesia just days before the Prime Minister Tony Abbott travels there. He's accused the Indonesia government of pious¹ rhetoric² over Australia's asylum³ seeker policies. Indonesia's Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa has warned Australia's plan to turn back asylum seeker boats risks damaging the relationship between the two countries.

 

Fire crews in New  South Wales are battling to contain several bushfires burning on the state’s mid-north coast. They spent the night back-burning and are being helped by easing winds and cooler temperatures. 

 

A Russian court has detained several Greenpeace activists⁴ including an Australian for two months. Colin Russell is among 30 activists arrested over a protest at an arctic oil drilling platform. Russia has threatened to charge them with piracy⁵ which carries a maximum 15 years in jail. 

 

The interpol has issued a global arrest notice for a British woman dubbed⁶ the “White Widow”. Semanth Latte White is the widow of one of the 2005 London bombers⁷ and is wanted for an alleged⁸ terrorist plot in Kenya.There has been speculation⁹ she was linked to the Nairobi shopping centre siege, but the notice makes no reference to that. 

 

Italian divers¹⁰ are searching the raised wreckage¹¹ of the Italian cruiseship the Costa Concordia have found human remains¹². Two people remain unaccounted for after the ship sank off the Italian coast in January last year. More than 30 people died in the disaster.
