 Police have arrested a man over a double murder in Melbourne's northwest overnight¹. The bodies of a man and a woman were found in a house at Moonee Ponds. Three young children aged² five and under were also found unharmed inside their house. Police arrested a 44-year-man in the home's driveway. He was taken to hospital with minor³ injuries. 

 

Tony Abbott will be among about 60 world leaders heading to South Africa to attend a memorial service for Nelson Mandela. Millions of South Africans have been remembering their former leader during a national day of prayer. The state funeral will be held for Mr Mandela at the end of the week. 

 

A man has died in a fire in a unit in Melbourne's inner⁴ southeast. The blaze⁵ broke out in the apartment in south Yarra just after mid-night. Firefighters found the man's body inside. 

 

An 18-month-old baby girl has drowned in a backyard pool in southwest New South Wales. Police said the toddler was pulled unconscious from the water at her home in Griffith. Paramedics were not able to recover her.

 

A relationship comedy about a sex change has won this year's Tropfest Short Film Festival. Thousands of people packed city Sydney's Centennial Park last night for the event. West Australian film maker⁶ Manhardy wrote and performed in the film “Bamboozled”. He also took out the award for best male actor.
