Lesson35 A Tender¹ Heart²
Peter was³ a ten year-old student at a city school. He was very good atfootball, playing forward⁴ on the school team.
Peter's grandfather and grandmother usually came⁶ to see him when there wasan important⁷ match. One day Peter said⁸ to his grandmother, "Our school'sgoing to play against⁹ Garden School next Saturday. Can you come and see thematch?""Oh, yes," his grandmother answered, "We love to see you play in thematch."The match took¹⁰ place in the park at half past two on Saturday.
In the first two minutes of the match, the boys from Garden School came veryclose to the City School's goal¹¹, but then the goalkeeper kicked¹³ the ball toPeter in the middle of the field¹⁴, and Peter ran⁵ with it and kicked itstraight into the goal. After he had¹⁵ scored¹⁷ once, Peter scored twice¹⁸ againbefore half time. In the second half of the match peter began to appearweird in the play. He missed the goal at the short distance²⁰ when nobody²¹ wasin his way.
After the match, Peter's grandfather said to him, "You missed a good chanceto score¹⁶ a fourth²² goal Peter. If you'd kicked the ball harder, you'd havegot a goal easily²³. Why didn't you kick¹² it hard then?""Because there weretears in the goalkeeper's eyes", Peter answered.
