Good morning from the CNN center here in Atlanta. I'm Melissa Long, it is a Thursday, the 6th of August. And here's a look at some of the stories that are happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

More than 800, 000 pounds of beef are being recalled because it may be linked to salmonella outbreak. The USDA says the beef is from Beef Packers which is based in Fresno California. The meat was sent to distributors in California, Arizona, Colorado and Utah, and repackaged under different names. The USDA says check with your grocery if you have any questions about the beef you have now purchased.

Lynette Squeaky Fromme is about to be released from prison. She served more than 30 years for trying to assassinate¹ former President Gerald Ford². She was convicted in 1975 of pointing a loaded gun at him, but agents kept her from firing. She is due to be paroled in 10 days. For years, she is part of the Charles Manson's so-called family.

Senators debating again today on Judge Sonia Sotomayor's nomination³ to the Supreme⁴ Court. The senate is expected to vote, in fact, this afternoon to confirm her as the newest Supreme Court Justice. She has the support of all Senate Democrats⁵ and at least seven, eight Republicans.

More cash will be going for more clunkers. It looks like congress is going to come up with 2 billion dollars more for the program. The Senate is expected to extend the Cash for Clunkers program in fact this afternoon, giving you until Labor⁶ Day not to trade in your old vehicle if, if it's the criterion.

And first-time jobless claims fell last week, but continuing claims are another story. Labor Department says first-time claim for the week ending August first fell 38, 000 to 588, 000 . The drop is larger than what was predicted by economists⁷. And then you have to look to continuing claims. They are up during the week, ending July 25th to 6. 3 million.
