We are getting new information on the helicopter plane collision over the Hudson this morning. Nine people died in the crash. At this moment, divers1 are getting back into the water for the recovery effort.
We are looking very closely at any air traffic control communications that might have occurred between the tower, the fixed2 wing aircraft that had just taken off from Teterboro and also any monitoring that might have gone on of that common frequency in the VFR corridor of the Hudson River. All of that would be part of our investigation3, but it is really too early to tell what, if any, might be a specific piece of information. We are gonna have to see what we find. And we are very interested in the witnesses that might have any video, surveillance video or other footage to come forward.
Our iReporters are also staying on top of this story. Jim Davidson sent us these photos from the scene. He lives just a few blocks from the river, on the Jersey4 side. There are some of the recovery efforts going on. He says he heard what sounded like a car backfiring or fireworks. He says he thinks, er, he didn't think much of it at the time, but someone called him, one of his friends called him, said and told him about the crash, then he ran down there and took some of these pictures, so much like what happened with the US air crash. A lot of resources there on the Hudson River to jump in and take care of business, unfortunately this one, no survivors5.
A 7.1 magnitude earthquake has struck south of Tokyo. Right now, there are no reports of any damages or casualties. But again it is still very early on in this. And at this point there is no danger of a tsunami6 but there is always the possibility of aftershocks.
Outside Los Angeles right now, officials are trying to defuse a riot that broke out last night at a California Institution for Men in Chino. At least 40 inmates7 were hurt and taken to area hospitals. Flames have been seen shooting from one of the prison buildings. Police and firefighters are on the scene. The prison itself is a medium security facility that houses about 1,400 inmates.
Take it to China now and a massive evacuation is under way, nearly a million people trying to flee from the path of an approaching typhoon. It's headed towards Southeastern China after unleashing8 torrential rains, just look at some of these in Taiwan. And we want to show you this that a building that perched right there on the river bank has toppled over. And the island has seen its worst flooding in 50 years. At least one person was killed in Taiwan and more than two dozen others missing.
