This is the official coronation portrait of George III, painted around the time he moved into Buckingham House. And as was the custom, he's in full royal regalia. Exquisite¹ gold silks and sumptuous² ermine robes. But look closely at his face, because this is a king he also wanted to be seen as good-natured and honest and open. A very different character from the previous owner, the Duke of Buckingham. Where he was showy and flamboyant³, George III was serious and conscientious⁴, even a little bit priggish. He presented Buckingham House to Queen Charlotte as a quiet family 

retreat, away from the hurly-burly of court life.
