How to learn English well?

Find something you like and do it in English

The second advice I want to share with my fellow students is this: find something you really like and do it in english.

 

I love TV dramas, biopics, TV series and entertainment shows like Graham Norton or The David Letterman Show. I startedto watch them in English with Italian subtitles¹, then with English subtitles and, now, I watch them without subtitles!

 

After a while I found myself able to capture² the deeper meaning of the dialogue and, as an old Italian proverb says,'I've started to understand not only the language but the culture behind it(the dialogue)'.

 

1 subtitles   

n.说明字幕，印在外国影片上的对白翻译字幕，译文对白字幕；小标题，副标题( subtitle的名词复数 )；（电影的）字幕

2 capture   

vt.捕获，俘获；占领，夺得；n.抓住，捕获

参考例句：

• The company is out to capture the European market.这家公司希望占据欧洲市场。
• With the capture of the escaped tiger,everyone felt relieved.逃出来的老虎被捕获后，大家都松了一口气。
