Simon: Hi! What's your name?

 

Nathan: My name is Nathan Curtis Gildard. Well, my name is Nathan but people call me Nate, so.

 

Simon: OK. What do you do in your free time?

 

Nathan: I do a lot of different things. I like to travel around, I like to go to places I've never been. I like to play guitar in a band, which I'm not in right now. I like to play soccer. I play soccer a lot, and I play futsal too.

 

Simon: Futsal, what's that?

 

Nathan: Futsal is a 5 a side soccer game, so it's played on a small court about the size of a basketball court, and the ball is smaller than a soccer ball, it's kind of heavy, and you have five people so there are 4 players and one keeper¹, goalie.

 

Simon: Oh, interesting. Is it similar to soccer in other ways?

 

Nathan: Well, it's similar in ways that you pass the ball but it's different in ways that for example you have a stop clock in the international futsal games, and professional² games, so there's a stop clock. The way you move around is very different, you know, you have positions like midfield, forward, defense³, but often a defender⁴ can find themselves playing forward which is kind of fun because defenders⁵ get a chance to score too.

 

Simon: OK, here is the last question, which do you prefer, soccer or the big football or futsal?

 

Nathan: Ah, that's a difficult question. I think at the moment I enjoy futsal a little bit more because it is a harder pace. You're running a lot faster. There's more chances to score. It's a really challenging⁶ game. It takes a lot of energy, and the five guys that you play with, there's only five people so you really depend on each other to do well so it's a real team sport. You really need each other.

You have five people, so there are four players and one keeper or goalie. 

A 'keeper' or 'goalie' is the person who stands in the goal and blocks the ball when the other team tries to score. This person protects the goal. Notice the following:

There's a stop clock in international and professional futsal games. 

A 'stop clock' is a digital⁷ clock that shows the amount of time left to play in the game. When there is a break in play this clock can be stopped until the game starts again. Notice the following:

Defenders can play forward, which is kind of fun because they get a chance to score too. 

When you 'get a chance to score' you have the opportunity to make a goal by kicking the ball into the other team's goal. Notice the following:

 

It wasn't until the second half that either team even got a chance to score.

The other team was so aggressive⁸ that your team didn't get a chance to score.

So which do you prefer, soccer or the big football or futsal? 

When you ask someone which of something they 'prefer' you are asking which one they like better. Notice the following:

At the moment, I enjoy futsal a little bit more because it is a harder pace. 

In this case a 'harder pace' is a more difficult or faster speed. Notice the following:

 

Now that I am older I can't handle games that have a harder pace.

The advanced class has a harder pace than the regular class.
