A day of pomp, circumstance and politics on Capitol Hill Tuesday, as Republicans assumed full control of Congress for the first time in 8 years. John Boehner was re-elected as speaker of the House for a third two-year term, despite some opposition¹ by some Tea Party lawmakers.

Former Virginia Governor Bob MacDonnell was sentenced Tuesday to two years in prison. He was convicted last September of 11 counts of public corruption². His wife, convicted of bribery³ will be sentenced next month.

A winter weather system has begun its trek⁴ from the Midwest to the Northeast with more than a foot of snow expected insome places, to be following by a separate blast of arctic air and unusually cold temperatures.

A host of prominent figures were on hand for the funeral of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo. His son Andrew, the current Governor, eulogized his father as a liberal leader, powerful speaker and fierce competitor on the basketball court.
