 Instead of marching forward, Jimmie suddenly darted¹ across the street, 吉米没有向前走，而是突然飞奔过了街道，

where a policeman's horse, frightened by the band, was rearing on his hind² legs. 一个警察的马受到了乐队的惊吓，拾起了后腿。

Jimmie's sharp eyes had seen a poor little dog struck by the hoofs³ of the frightened horse. 吉米敏锐地看到一只可怜的小狗被受惊的马踢到了。

There the little animal lay in the street, with one leg broken. 小狗躺在那儿，一条腿断了。

Jimmie caught up the little dog just in time to save him from being run over by an automobile⁴. 吉米抱起了小狗，让它及时地避开了汽车的碾压。

But what could he do with him? 可是，他该怎么安置它呢？

That night there was a Scout⁵ meeting, but Jimmie was a little late, for he had stopped to help his father set the dog's broken leg. 那天晚上童子军有个集会，但吉米达到了一小会儿，因为他要帮爸爸医治小狗的断腿。
