　　Then the king led the miller's daughter into a stable, 接着，国王把磨坊主的女儿带到马厩里，

　　in which were two or three bundles of straw. 里面放着两三捆稻草。

　　He looked at the miller's daughter and smiled. 他看着磨坊主的女儿，笑了。

　　"There," said he, "you have straw enough. Spin that into gold before morning." “喂，”他说，“给你的稻草已经够多了，在天亮之前把它变成黄金。”

　　Having said this, with his own hand he locked the door, and left her to herself. 说完这话，亲手锁上门，只留小女孩一个人在里面。

　　She looked at the spinning-wheel, and she looked at the straw; 小女孩看了看纺车，又看了看稻草；

　　and at the thought of what would happen on the morrow, she cried, 一想到第二天会发生的事，她哭了，

　　"O father! father!" and burst into tears. “啊，父亲！“父亲！”眼泪不住地流。

　　As she sat there weeping, there was a rustling², and again a rustling. 当她坐在那里哭泣的时候，沙沙声阵阵传来。

　　Then out from under the straw came a little midget of a man, 接着，从稻草下面出来了一个小矮人，

　　with a peaked hat on his head, long thin legs, a red nose, 他头上戴着尖顶帽子，细长的腿，红色的鼻子，

　　and a rusty- colored beard that swept down even below his belt. 还有一把锈迹斑斑的胡子，一直垂到腰带下面。

　　"What's all this crying about?" he asked angrily. 你在哭什么？”小矮人生气地问道。

　　"I can't get a minute's rest from it." “吵地我没法休息。”

　　The miller's daughter was so surprised at the sight of him that she stopped crying and told him all. 磨坊主的女儿见到他非常惊讶，她停止了哭泣，说出了事情的经过。

　　He laughed at her. "Spin straw into gold! Why, that's no trouble. 小矮人笑了。“把稻草纺成金子！为什么哭呢，这不是什么难事。

　　What will you give me if I spin it for you?" 如果我为你办到了，你能给我什么?”

　　The miller's daughter gazed at the dwarf through her tears. 磨坊主的女儿泪眼汪汪地望着小矮人。

　　She had never before seen so odd and ugly-looking a little man. 她从来没有见过这么古怪、丑陋的小个子男人。

　　But he looked back at her out of his needle-sharp eyes with such cunning³ that she half believed that he could do what he said 但他回望着小女孩时，眼神里透露出的狡诈劲让女孩儿几乎相信他能说到做到。
