 Standing on the shore of the lake, Beowulf turned to the king. 贝奥武夫站在湖边，转向国王。

"Now, O King, I am ready,"he said. “大王、现在我准备好了，”他说。

"If I do not return, I pray you be a friend to my warriors¹ and send the gifts which you gave me to my king. “我若没有回去、求大王善待和我同行的勇士，将大王赐给我的礼物送给他们。

Then he will know that I fought bravely.” 这样他就会知道我英勇奋战了。”

Before Hrothgar could answer, Beowulf plunged² into the water. 赫罗斯加还没来得及回答，贝奥武夫就跳进了水里。

Down, down he went into the dark lake. 向下，向下，贝奥武夫进入了暗湖。

THE BATTLE UNDER THE WATER 水下之战

The monster saw Beowulf coming, and lay waiting for him. 怪物看见贝奥武夫来了，就在那里等他。

As soon as he touched the bottom, she sprang upon him and seized him in her terrible claws³. 贝奥武夫一到海底，怪物就扑过来，用可怕的爪子抓住了贝奥武夫。

Only his armor saved the hero from death in that fierce⁴ grasp. 只有盔甲才能让贝奥武夫在凶狠的魔爪下死里逃生

When she found that the armor could not be broken, she dragged him off to her cave. 怪物发现盔甲坚不可摧，就把贝奥武夫拖到洞里。

There, deep down under the waters, Beowulf fought the hardest battle of his life. 在下水深处，贝奥武夫和怪兽进行了他一生中最艰苦的战斗。

Backward⁵ and forward struggled the hero and the monster, in and out of the cave. 英雄和怪物在洞里来来去去地打斗着。

At last Beowulf felt that his strength was leaving him. 最后，贝奥武夫感到自己的力量在减弱。

At this moment the brave hero saw a great sword⁶ hanging on the wall of the cave. 这时，勇敢的贝奥武夫看到山洞的墙上挂着一把巨剑。

Never before had he seen such a weapon. 他以前从未见过这样的武器。

Surely⁷ no one but a giant had ever used it. 除了贝奥武夫之外，肯定没有人用过。
