Bob set up the tree in the middle of the big barn. 鲍勃把那棵树竖在大谷仓的中间。

Betty made little bundles and hung them on the tree: a package of meat cut fine for Shep, marked with his name in big letters; 贝蒂做了一些小包裹，挂在树上：一包切好的肉是给沙普的，上面用大字写着它的名字；

seven cat- nip mice hung by their string tails for the seven cats on the farm; four carrots tied in a bunch of hay for Molly, the young horse; 七只猫草做的老鼠，尾巴吊起来，让农场里的七只猫抓着玩；四根胡萝卜绑在一堆干草里给幼马莫莉；

four apples tied in hay for Duke, the old gray horse; lumps of sugar for Shep and Duke and Molly. 四个苹果绑在干草里给那匹灰色的老马杜克；几块给谢普、杜克和莫莉的糖。

Then Betty was puzzled. She ran to Uncle Ben. 贝蒂随后感到很困惑，她跑向叔叔本。

"Well, my cows like cornstalks. There is a pile back of the old barn." “嗯，我的牛喜欢玉米杆，旧谷仓后面有一堆。”

So Betty tied some cornstalks in loose bunches and placed them at the base of the tree. 于是贝蒂把一些玉米杆松散地捆好，放在树底下。

The horses nodded "Thank you” as they ate the sugar, carrots, and apples that the children held out to them. 马儿们吃着孩子们递给它们的糖、胡萝卜和苹果，还一边点头表示“谢谢”。

The cats and kittens played with their catnip mice and lapped up saucers of milk. 大猫和猫仔们玩着猫草做的老鼠，舔着盘子里的牛奶。

The cows crunched¹ their cornstalks and looked at the queer antics of the kittens. 奶牛一边嘎吱嘎吱地嚼着玉米杆，一边看着小猫们摆出各种滑稽的动作。

Bob carried the bag of corn out to the hen yard, and Betty fed the chickens, which crowded around her feet. 鲍勃带着一袋玉米去了鸡舍，小鸡们挤在贝蒂她脚边，吃着玉米。
