Henry W.Longfellow was great American storyteller, but he told his stories in poetry. 亨利·W.朗费罗是另一位伟大的美国讲故事的人，但他用诗歌讲故事。

You are now going to read part of a long poem about Indian life. 你现在要读一首关于印第安人生活的长诗的一部分。

In this poem Longfellow tells for us many of the old stories or legends that the story-tellers of the tribes¹ passed on from one to another down through the years. 在这首诗中，朗费罗为我们讲述了许多古老的故事或传说，讲述部落故事的人代代相传。

By the shores of Gitche Gurnee, 在迦基古尼的海边，

By the shining Big-Sea-Water, 在波光粼粼的大海边，

Stood the wigwam of Nokomis, 矗立着诺科米斯的棚屋，

Daughter of the Moon, Nokomis. 月亮的女儿，诺科米斯。

Dark behind it rose the forest, 黑暗的背后是森林，

Rose the black and gloomy² pine-trees. 黑压压的松树拔地而起。
