 I was still awake when we came through a shallow mountain pass and the sun, behind us now, reflected off the tiled rooftops of the Valley of the Sun.  当我们开进一条浅浅的山道时，我依然清醒着。太阳从我们身后照过来，折射在太阳谷酒店的平顶屋顶上。

I didn't have enough emotion left to be surprised that we'd made a threeday journey in one. I stared blankly at the wide, flat expanse laid out in front of me.  我们只用了一天的时间就走完了三天的路程，但我几乎没有多余的气力来感到惊讶。我茫然地盯着眼前那片开阔平坦的城市。

The shadows of the palm trees slanted⁵ across the freeway — defined, sharper than I remembered, paler than they should be. Nothing could hide in these shadows.  棕榈树在高速路的两旁洒下歪斜的树影——那些清晰的树影，比我记忆里的还要棱角分明，颜色浅淡得出奇。没有什么能藏在那些树影里。

The bright, open freeway seemed benign⁶ enough. But I felt no relief, no sense of homecoming. 这条明亮的开阔的高速路显得很是情切。但我却毫无宽慰之情，丝毫没有回到家的感觉。

Which way to the airport, Bella? Jasper had asked, and I flinched⁷, though his voice was quite soft and unalarming.  “去机场走哪条路，贝拉？”贾斯帕问道，让我畏缩了一下，尽管他的声音是那么的温柔，毫无警惕之意。

Are we flying somewhere? I'd asked Alice. “我们要飞去别的地方吗？”我问爱丽丝。

No, but it's better to be close, just in case. “不，但离机场近些会更好些，只是以防万一。”

I remembered beginning the loop around Sky Harbor International… but not ending it. I suppose that must have been when I'd fallen asleep.  我想起来了，我的故事是从国际航空港脚下开始的……但不会在这里结束。我猜就是在这个时候，我睡着了。
