10 Pip and Herbert talk about love
I returned1 to London, dreaming2 of the beautiful girl, now a woman, who had3 so influenced4 my childhood, and who, I hoped6, would7 share8 my future9 life10. I am sorry to say I did11 not think about dear, good Joe at all. I felt I had to ex-press my feelings13 to someone14, and so that evening I told Herbert my secret16.
Instead17 of being18 surprised19, as20 I expected21, my friend replied22,
‘I know that already23, Handel. You never told me, but it was25 obvious26.You've always loved Estella. It's very lucky27 that you seem28 to have been chosen to marry29 her.Does she, er,admire you?’
I shook30 my head sadly31.‘Not at all. And Herbert, you may think me lucky.I have great expectations,I know. But all that depends32 on one person33! And I still don't really know how much I'll receive34, or when! Nothing is certain35!’
‘Now, Handel,'said36 Herbert cheerfully,‘don't lose38 hope5.Mr Jaggers himself39 told you you would have a large fortune,didn't he? He would never make a mistake40 about something like that.Anyway41, you'll be twenty-one soon.Perhaps42 you'll discover43 more then.’
‘Thank you,Herbert!’ I said, feeling12 much better.
‘But I want to ask you something, my dear Handel,'said Herbert, looking serious44 for once.‘Think of Estella, and her education45, and how unhappy46 you may be with her.Couldn't you possibly-and I'm saying47 this as a friend, remember-couldn't you forget about her?’
‘I know you're right, Herbert,’I said miserably,‘but I can never stop loving48 her.’
‘Well, never mind49!'said Herbert.‘Now I have something to tell you myself50. I am engaged51.’
‘May I ask the young lady's name?’
‘Clara. Her mother's dead52, and she lives with her father. We must keep our feelings for each other secret, because I haven't enough money to marry her yet53. As soon as I start in-suring ships we can marry.’Herbert tried to look hopeful54 about his future, but this time he couldn't even15 manage55 his usual56 cheerful37 smile.
One day I received57 a letter which made58 my heart59 beat60 fast.
‘I am coming to London the day after tomorrow by the mid-day coach61.Miss Havisham wants you to meet me.
Estella.’
If there had been time,I would have ordered62 several63 new suits64.I ate65 nothing until66 the day arrived, and all morning I waited impatiently67 for the coach. She seemed68 more beautiful than ever24, and her manner69 to me was very pleasant70, as I took71 her to the house in London where Miss Havisham had arranged72 for her to stay. Her life seemed to be planned74 by Miss Havisham right down to the smallest detail75.I only hoped I was part76 of that plan73.
