 January 7th, 1789The United States holds its first the first presidential election more than a decade after the declaration of independence. Americans both for elect tours who a month later choose George Washington to be the nation’s first President. 1999In Washington, an impeached¹ American president goes on trial before the U.S. Senate for only the second time in history. Bill Clinton faced charges of perjury² and obstruction³ of justice over the Monica Lewinski scandal. He is acquitted⁴ the following month.

1979Vietnamese forces captured the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh, overthrowing⁵ the Khmer Rouge⁶ regime of Paul Pot. As many as 2 million Cambodians died under that regime which had turn the country into a vast slave labor⁷ camp.
