People all over the world shake² hands for many different reasons⁴.

We shake hands when we meet new people or during⁵ special

festivals. Athletes⁶ often shake hands before or after games.

Business⁷ people shake hands when they make a deal⁸!

 

Why do we shake hands? Why don't we shake feet? A long time ago,

most people carried knives or guns⁹. When people did¹⁰ not want to

fight¹¹, they showed their empty hands. Maybe people shook¹² hands so

they could¹³ not hide¹⁴ knives in their sleeves¹⁵. Later¹⁶, hand-shaking

became¹⁷ a sign of peace¹⁸.

 

 

Today we don't have to worry about people with guns and knives but we

still shake hands a lot! The reason³ is simple¹⁹ --it's still a sign of friendship²⁰.
