               Notes

    Influenza⁴ is an acute and highly contagious⁵ disease caused by a
filterable virus. Since it resembles many common respiratory ailments⁶,
it is usually difficult to diagnose in absence of an epidemic⁷. Although
sporadic⁸ cases do occur, epidemics⁹ of influenza, sometimes worldwide in
scope, can affect a large population. For example, in 1918, more than
20 million people were hit by influenza.
