The hijacking1, or forcible seizure2, of commercial aircraft in
flight became widespread during the 1960s. The passengers in the planes
were usually held hostage for the acceptance of the hijackers' demands.
Some hijackers were escaped prisoners seeking to leave the country;
some demanded money; others had political aims.

Olympic games originated in ancient Greece in 776 B.C. The Greek
games, held once every four years, reached their height in the 5th and
4th centuries B.C., but were discontinued at the end of the 4th
century. The modern revival3 of the games began in Athens in 1896. They
have since been staged at 4-year intervals4 in cities around the world.
Women were first allowed to compete in 1912, and a separate series of
winter games began in 1924.
