英闻天下——120 China to Survey Diaoyu Islands: Spokesman

 　　Chinese authorities are planning to survey the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea as part of a program to map its territorial¹ islands and reefs.

 

　　A Chinese Foreign Ministry² spokesperson said the move is aimed to "safeguard China's marine³ rights".

 

　　The first stage of the island surveying and mapping was launched in 2009.

 

　　Work to monitor islands located within 100 km of the coastline has been completed, according to a document from the National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation.

 

　　The second stage will cover islands including the Diaoyu Islands.

 

　　Relations between the two East Asian neighbors have plunged⁴ since the Japanese government purchased some of the Diaoyu Islands from their private owner last September.

 

　　China has issued several statements, reiterating⁵ its sovereignty over the islands and adjacent waters.

 

　　Japan has scrambled⁶ fighter jets several times to follow China's surveillance ships and flights flying over the region.

 

　　Earlier, Chinese Vice⁷ Foreign Minister Fu Ying has met with Kenji Kosaka, a member of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

 

　　China's Foreign Ministry said that China and Japan have maintained communication on how to settle current disputes at various diplomatic levels.
