Venezuelan President-elect Nicolas Maduro is accusing the opposition1 of planning a coup2 against him following his narrow election victory.
At least 7 people have been killed across the country during violent clashes at opposition protests.
"I can announce here: we have defeated a coup. But they are going to continue to destabilize. Today I declare the coup defeated."
Opposition leader Henrique Capriles called on his supporters to protest this Wednesday after the electoral authority turned down his demand for a recount.
However, Maduro says he will not allow the opposition to go ahead with the planned rally in the centre of Caracas, saying it was time "for a tough hand."
Senior government figures have also raised the possibility of legal action against Capriles.
For his part, Capriles says the government was responsible for the violence as it sought to avoid a vote recount.
Capriles also earlier repeated his call for peaceful demonstration3.
Maduro has won by a 1.6 margin4 over Capriles on Sunday's election with the opposition alleging5 fraud.
Maduro is set to be sworn in on Friday.
