Neil: So, Sun Chen, we're talking about tennis and London. Where do you think we are today?

Sun Chen: It must be Wimbledon. 温布尔登。But Wimbledon's in the summer...

Neil: Well the tennis championships are in the summer, but there's a museum which is open all year round. Welcome to On the Town from BBC Learning English, I'm Neil.

Neil: This is the programme where we find out about interesting places to visit in London. Honor Godfrey is the curator of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum. It means she's in charge of the museum.

Neil: The museum takes you through the history of the most famous tennis tournament in the world, using exhibits and interactive² displays.

Sun Chen: 那我们能在这里见到什么呢?

Neil: There's a collection of tennis memorabilia.

Sun Chen: 记录重要事件的纪念品。Memorabilia.

Neil: So, you can see old tennis racquets and some of the clothes that tennis players have worn. It's funny to see how the fashions have changed – especially the women's clothes. Here's Honor talking about some outfits³ from over a hundred years ago.

They're high-necked, they have long sleeves and it was obviously very hampering⁴ for people, for women, to play in these clothes and you've got to remember that underneath⁵ they were wearing corsets and layer upon layer of petticoats.

Sun Chen: They don’t sound like sports clothes. 不过听起来，这些可不像是比赛的时候，穿得衣服啊！

Neil: No, they were hampering.

Sun Chen: 特累赘。Hampering.

Neil: They wore corsets and layers of petticoats.

Neil: There are also films and videos of some of the most famous matches in the tournament's history. There's also a two-hundred degree cinema which shows the science of tennis.

Neil: Do you know John McEnroe?

Neil: Yes you can see the actual Wimbledon trophies. Here's Honor describing them.

Both of these are wonderful silver-gilt trophies. The men's singles trophy⁷ is a cup with two handles, very ornate floral decorations and it's topped with a pineapple; and the Ladies' plate again is very, very heavily embossed: you can see some of the names of the Ladies' Singles Champions around just inside the rim⁸ of the bowl.

Neil: They're silver-gilt.

Sun Chen: 镀银的。

Neil: The men's has ornate floral decorations. Ornate.

Sun Chen: 就是华美的。Ornate.

Neil: Floral decorations.

Sun Chen: 用雕花来装饰。Floral decorations.

Neil: And on the top there's a pineapple – well, not a real one.

Sun Chen: And the women's?

Neil: It's embossed with the names of the champions. Embossed.
