China still lays claim to the Island of Taiwan as its territory. So it's significant that the firstgovernment to government talks between Beijing and Taipei have taken place today, the fristsince the communists came to power in 1949. The Taiwanese minister has set the four-day visitas the result of many years' improving relations. So what do people on the streets of Beijingmake of this meeting?
"The first meeting is a very good opportunity. And it shows there is hope though the hope toachieve unification is very small. Tourists from mainland China are traveling in Taiwan in recentyears and this has promoted the tourism industry and economy in Taiwan and it benefitsTaiwan. I know a few Taiwanese here and they earn a lot of money from mainland every year. Ithink this is a good thing. The biggest problem is the two parties have different ideas of ruling.Since 1949 in more than 60 years, Taiwan has been developing better than we have. Of course,we are trying to catch up, but in terms of politics, the system, the rule of law, freedom ofspeech, there are still gaps."
"As far as I can see, most people in Taiwan are friendly to us, because we are the same race. And I don't feel the atmosphere was strained. I feel unification will definitely happen in thefuture. But it's hard to estimate how long that will take."
The BBC's Martin Patience in Beijing is watching the talks for us.
"Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and insists that it must be reunited with themainland by force if necessary. So the fact that these talks went ahead was usually symbolic1.Both sides are keen to play out the historic2 significance. But neither China nor Taiwan isexpecting any major breakthrough insisting the talks are about building trust. In recent years, relations between the two sides have eased significantly. Trade between the mainland andTaiwan has almost doubled in the last five years. For Taiwan, there is no ignoring the world'ssecond largest economy. And Beijing is likely to regard these talks as an opportunity tofurther its long term goal of reunification. Martin Patience in Beijing. "
