The families of the Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped inSouthern Borno state four weeks ago have reactedto the video released by the Islamist group BokoHaram. Some told the BBC that seeing the girls alivehas given them hope, although they were shocked at seeing the mostly Christian1 girls in Islamicdress. In the video, the Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau offers to trade girls for jailedBoko Haram members. The interior Ministry2 has rejected such a deal. Senator Ali Ndume, whorepresents the region from where the girls were abducted3, encourages all possible ways tosecure their release.

Exit Polls published by the Indian media say Mr. Modi and his Hindu nationalist BJP are on courseto form the next government. Polls have a bad record here though, they got the last twoelections wrong and the results will not be counted until Friday. But record turnouts usuallysignal big change. And if Mr. Modi has been victorious6, it will mean an end to 10 years of rule bythe Congress party with the Gandhi family as its head.

Pro-Russian militants7 in eastern Ukraine have said they want to become part of the RussianFederation following Sunday's referendums on self-rule. The government in Kiev has denouncedthe polls as illegal. Richard Galpin reports from Donetsk.

It’s a packed news conference here, one of the top separatist leaders, Denis Pushilin, said theyhad declared independence, but soon hope the Donetsk region will be ought to join Russia.And Pushilin said there’d be no need to have a second referendum. So far Moscow has notcommented on this specifically, but earlier the Kremlin did say the will of the people who'd votedon Sunday through referendum in eastern Ukraine should be respected and the resultsimplemented peacefully.

Both the United States and the Europe Union had dismissed the referendums as illegal.

The Italian government has again accused the European Union of doingtoo little to address the issue.

The chief prosecutor12 of the murder trial of the South African Oscar Pistorius has said theathlete should undergo mental evaluations13 after a psychiatrist14 called by the defense15 told thecourt that Mr. Pistorius suffered from an anxiety disorder16. Andrew Harding sends this report.

Psychiatrist Merryll Vorster said Oscar Pistorius suffered from a lifelong anxiety disorderbecause of his amputated legs, his parents' behavior and his mother's early death. She said theathlete was the result, both controlling and vulnerable with heightened fear of crime. Dr.Vorster said, because of the athlete's disability, he was more likely to fight than to flee whenconfronted with a perceived threat. With the prosecutor is now arguing that if his mentalcondition is being used to as a defense, then Mr. Pistorius should be evaluated by court-appointed experts.

Health officials in the United States have confirmed a second case of a virus that has killedmore than 100 people in Saudi Arabia. A person in Florida has been found to have Middle EastRespiratory Syndrome17. Earlier this month, a healthcare worker who traveled to Indiana fromSaudi Arabia was diagnosed with the disease. Most cases have been found in Saudi Arabia.
