Several hundreds Central American migrants are gathering⁵ on the US-Mexican border, preparing to enter the United States to claim asylum⁶. They are the remaining members of a caravan⁷ of 1500 people who set off for the US at the end of March organised by a migrant pressure group. James Cook has more details. The migrants set off from Tapachula on Mexico southern border just over a month ago, traveling by bus, free train and on foot, grabbing the attention of President Trump⁸, who characterised the caravan as "a threat to the safety of the United States". On a breezy Sunday afternoon, some 200 migrants including dozens of children made the final walk through the Mexican town of Tijuana to the border, where they are presenting themselves to the American authorities, asking for asylum from violence and persecution⁹ in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
