In one of the worst mass killings¹ in recent US history, a gunman has shot dead 20 children and six adults at a primary school in the northeastern state of Connecticut. A police spokesman said the gunman himself was also died and another body had been found at a location connected with him. Paul Adams reports from Washington.

The police search the building thoroughly⁴ recovering a handgun and the rifle. Lieutenant⁵ Paul Vance spoke to reporters when the search was over.

The Israeli Justice Ministry¹¹ said on Thursday with charging Mr Lieberman over alleged¹² irregularities concerning the leaking of information about a police inquiry¹³. More serious allegations including money laundering¹⁴ and bribery¹⁵ have been dropped. The resignation comes six weeks before Irael's general election. Mr Lieberman's right-wring party and the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud group had formed an electoral pact¹⁶ ahead of the ballot¹⁷.

There has been clashes in the Egyptian city of Alexandria between supporters and opponents of President Mohammed Morsi. The violence came as the country prepared to vote in a referendum on a controversial new constitution. Shaimaa Khalil has been following developments from Cairo.
