"Structure is what leads to success, not waking up before the sun rises," author Craig Ballantyne told to Forbes' contributor Garrett Gunderson.
Ballantyne makes his livelihood1 on the "early to rise" theory yet acknowledges that not all of us are the type to meditate2, run 14 miles and find inbox zero before 7 a.m. Rather, you can prep for productivity the previous night with this 10-minute trick.
1. Brain dump: At the end of your workday, declutter your racing3 mind. Write down all of tomorrow's to-dos. Clear your thoughts of all this stress.
2. To-do list: From your brain dump, select just three important tasks that must be completed tomorrow. Don't overload4 or overestimate5 yourself, which re-invites stress.
3. Scribble6 notes: For the three to-do items, jot7 down notes. For example, if you need to make a call or publish an article tomorrow, write the topics you'll discuss. These keywords will more easily trigger idea flow the next morning.
