托福阅读TPO4长难句分析

 　　教学过程中经常遇到学生对于长难句的分析和理解不到位的情况，长难句的分析和理解会影响学生在托福阅读的理解尤其是在句子简化题。这次题目解析针对于TPO4的一个长难句：

　　Deer Populations of the Puget Sound(TPO4)① A worsening of the plight¹ of deer was to be expected as settlers encroached on the land， logging， burning， and clearing， eventually replacing a wilderness² landscape with roads， cities， towns， and factories.

　　难句类型：原因状语从句＋并列结构＋复杂修饰固定搭配to be expected表示“可以预见”，as在这里可以表示伴随的状态，译为“随着”，也可以看作引导原因状语从句。另外一个需要注意的就是句中两次出现的并列结构：logging，burning，and clearing，eventually replacing和roads，cities，towns，and factories由于意向一致，这两次并列的出现在阅读时都可以以其中一个作为代表提取出来，从而简化较长的句子，也降低了理解和记忆的难度。

　　译文：

　　可以预见，鹿群的处境将逐渐恶化，因为人类在他们生活的土地上进行采伐、焚烧，清除障碍，最终将荒野风景变成公路、城市、城镇和工厂。

　　【类比】复杂结构的句子，再拿一个长难句举个例子。

　　② In addition to finding an increase of suitable browse³， like huckleberry and vine maple⁴， Arthur Einarsen， longtime game biologist in the Pacific Northwest， found quality of browse in the open areas to be substantially more nutritive.

　　难句类型：插入成分＋固定搭配＋复杂修饰句中比较明显的插入成分，即出现在两个逗号之间的，有“like huckleberry and vine maple”， 和“longtime game biologist in the Pacific Northwest”，但从广义上来说，开头的In addition to finding an increase of suitable browse，也可以看做是插入成分。在主干部分，提取出find……to be这一固定搭配使句意的理解得以简化：研究对象是“quality of browse in the open areas”，特点是“substantially more nutritive”。

　　译文：

　　除了找到越来越多适合的嫩叶，比如越橘类和枫叶以外，有很长时间从业经验的太平洋西北的狩猎生物学家亚瑟·埃纳森发现在空旷地区的嫩叶的成分大部分都是更有营养的。

3 browse

参考例句：

• I had a browse through the books on her shelf.我浏览了一下她书架上的书。
• It is a good idea to browse through it first.最好先通篇浏览一遍。

4 maple   

n.槭树，枫树，槭木

参考例句：

• Maple sugar is made from the sap of maple trees.枫糖是由枫树的树液制成的。
• The maple leaves are tinge with autumn red.枫叶染上了秋天的红色。
