该习语原意是指账本最底行，盈亏一栏的结算行，后引申为本质问题的含义。

2.cross the line    越界；过火

在过去的拳击比赛中，双方选手都不可跨过地上的红线，cross the line 可能正是源于此，后引申为过火，过分。

Celebrations break out once troops cross the line.

在部队越过边境时大家一同庆祝。

The show’s pretty outrageous,but I don’t think it cross the line.

3.draw the line   界定，明确区分；（因不赞同）拒绝做某事

与cross the line 类似，该短语也可能源于最初的球类运动或拳击运动，在比赛时以界定线为标准。
