This is my play with acronyms again.  The ACRONYM U.S.E. is quite neat.

Use Simple English we teach at the University of Simple English

I am an advocate for simple English all my life, having gone through the first stage in writing composition myself at high school when one invariably writes in complicated sentence structures and big words as we all learn from books.  As your command of English gets better, you will understand that those long-winding sentences should be split up into shorter ones, and the big words replaced by simpler words.

Then the next striking experience came when I saw how lucidly and neatly my British managing director boss wrote business letters.  From then on, my mind was set on promoting simple English.  As non-native speakers of English not living in the western countries, we should set up our goal to learn primarily simple English to conduct ourselves socially and at work.  In China in particular, you are dealing more often with buyers from countries in the African continent, Arabia, Eastern Europe and South East Asia.  You will find broken English a better substitute for fluent English in most cases.

Our college students are wasting their prime time in learning a foreign language because they are pointed to the wrong goal.  There is a vacuum in between those who know only the alphabets ABC and those advanced level English users.  I would not bother touching BBC, VOA or the major publications like the TIMES, NEWSWEEK or Asian Wall Street Journal as their target readers are native speakers.  What I endeavor to do now is to put in a bridge to fill up that gap.  That bridge should be named SIMPLE ENGLISH.

To side track a bit now, we have also to determine what the learners should learn according to their own requirements.
1) Factory workers, packers and logistics movers:  the 26 alphabets are good enough as they need English only to read the shipping marks and the description on packings.

2) Those with limited learning time or not going deep into the language:   Learn conversational sets for use either at work or for social interaction.

3) Office workers, technical people, scholars etc.:  Certainly they have to go much deeper into the language and study the language and culture thoroughly.

Having sorted this out, we will go back to this bridging level of English I call SIMPLE ENGLISH.  It is actually quite difficult to find simple English reading material in China.  People stick to textbooks or materials developed by foreigners as conversational sets.

This blog therefore is created for the purpose of showing my simple English writings to share with English lovers and learners in China.  I don't have a great voice, but I will try to upload my voice file of all my blog pages for the guidance of my supporters.

See you soon.
