One of the three largest museums in China-the Nanjing Museum-is hosting an exhibition themed on horses to usher¹ in the Chinese New Year.

Antiques made from a variety of materials demonstrate the evolving history of the relationship between man and horse. And the 55 artworks on display here span a period of 1,500 years.

In Chinese culture the horse is auspicious², but combined with other zodiac animals it has historically taken on more specific meanings.

Highlights at the venue³ include eight horse paintings by Ignatius Sickeltart, who took the Chinese name Ai Qimeng and worked as a royal painter in the Qing Dynasty court.

Every picture is of a life-sized horse, and this is the first time ever for them to be exhibited
