The Eastern Star ship, which capsized in the Yangtze River Monday night, is located in a remote part of the river that is hard to access from land, making it difficult for personnel and rescue equipment to be delivered to the site.
On Tuesday night, 200 armed police officers worked around the clock to create a path to allow faster access.
"According to the requirements of the field commander from the hydropower headquarters, they mobilized their three corps, made up of seven teams, 200 soldiers, and 30 sets of heavy equipment, all of which arrived overnight," said Zhou Xiuguang, commander of armed police, Hubei province.
"They started construction from seven o’clock in the evening and worked until five o’clock in the morning. We hope to open the road by cooperating with local traffic department."
The path is based around 1 kilometer from where the capsized boat is based, making it ideally located for machinery and logistics vehicles.
Local armed police from the hydropower department worked through the night to create the path, which will save time for deliveries needed in the rescue work.
