What do we know about the Sino-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue? The S&ED is a forum for China and the United States to mutually discuss a broad range of strategic, long-term, and global issues.
The forum was formally established on April 1st, 2009, during the first meeting of then Chinese President Hu Jintao and US President Barack Obama at the G20 Summit in London.
It was an upgrade from two previous mechanisms: the China-US Senior Dialogue and the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue. The S&ED is comprised of a "Strategic Track" and an "Economic Track," and is co-chaired by special representatives of the heads of state of both countries.
In terms of the outcomes of the previous mechanisms, the S&ED covers not only bilateral issues, but also multilateral topics such as financial sector reform, balanced growth of world economy, climate change, and regional security. It also plays an important role in strengthening Sino-US ties and contributing to the building of a new model of a major-power relationship.
