Bodies being 1)exhumed from a mass 2)grave in Serbia reportedly show signs of 3)torture. Authorities say the remains1 are those of 4)Kosovo Muslims, whose bodies were discovered two years ago in a refrigerated 5)trailer at the bottom of the Danube River.
Exhumation2 of the grave began on Saturday. Radio B-92 quoted police sources as saying there were signs of torture on the 86 bodies found in the grave, which included three heads without 6)torsos. The radio said the bodies were those of women, children, and elderly men. Several bodies were in uniforms of the Kosovo Liberation Army, which was officially 7)disbanded after NATO-led peacekeepers took control of the troubled province in June 1999.
8)Authorities say the bodies appear to have been hidden as part of a possible cover-up of war 9)crimes in Kosovo province. 10)Investigators have said former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic instructed his police minister Vlatko Stoiljkovic to hide evidence of civilian3 11)casualties among Kosovo's ethnic4 Albanian majority population that could be subject to investigation5 by the U.N. War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague.
The 12)tribunal indicted6 both Mr. Milosevic and Mr. Stoiljkovic in 1999 for alleged7 13)atrocities8 committed by Yugoslav forces against Kosovo Albanians.
The tribunal's deputy chief prosecutor9, Graham Blewitt, told Serbian media Sunday that the U.N. court was aware of the bodies found in the Danube before their discovery was made public last month. Mr. Blewitt made clear that this was only one example of 14)attempts by the former regime to hide evidence of war atrocities, saying investigations10 are underway into the burning of bodies in Kosovo before and during NATO's 1999 air strikes.
U.N. prosecutors11 hope that the exhumation of the mass grave could help their investigation into the fate of an estimated 3,000 missing Kosovo Albanians. They also hope it will speed up the 15)extradition12 of Mr. Milosevic and others indicted by the tribunal.
The government has begun consideration of a draft law that would allow extradition of suspected war criminals, including the former president, to the U.N. tribunal in The Hague. Current Yugoslav law does not allow the extradition of suspects abroad.
Mr. Milosevic was arrested on April 1 on charges of corruption13 and 16)abuse of power.
