When the US first imposed tariffs1 on Chinese goods, Beijing predicted the strategy would backfire. In China’s manufacturing heartland Guangdong, entrepreneurs and workers are feeling the pinch as the talks drag on. At a recent industrial Expo, several spoke2 with VOA about the impact. Our target market is in mainland China, mainly those machine tool factories. Now they have been affected3, so naturally we will be affected too. For now, I hope the economy will be more stable and better, of course right? What worries us is that the trade war really begins on a full scale and imposes a huge impact on us that worries everyone, right? None of us would want that.
It’s exactly that we don’t have much to produce. We don’t have orders. We don’t hire anyone. We have too many people here. They are trying to lay off some because they can’t make ends meet anymore. Having to pay so many people, there are no orders so we all re just sitting around. This is not targeted at exporters in just one particular industry. Everyone is facing the problem. Chinese business have already diversified4 in recent years: Building factories abroad to save labor5 costs and finding new suppliers. Some business owners here are looking to the government to help them better compete.
The tariffs the US imposed on us have really been a big blow on Chinese businesses. We’re waiting to see if our government can come up policies that give us some support. Government aids will be good, too. I can’t really comment much on this, but I think in terms of the development of our economy, first of all, China has its own market, and second, the outside world has also been more and more transparent6 for us. On the whole, things are heading toward a better future, so I think our businesses should adapt to the environment instead of trying to change the environment. We can’t change the environment.
