Pulp¹ Fiction is a 1994 American crime film directed by Quentin Tarantino. The film is known for its rich dialogue, mix of humor and violence, and its nonlinear storyline. The film was nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture. Tarantino and co-writer Roger Avary won for Best Original Screenplay. The film was also awarded the Palme d'Or at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival. It was a major critical and commercial success. It re-energized the career of its leading man, John Travolta, who received an Academy Award nomination². His co-stars Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman were also nominated for an Oscar. As with many of Tarantino's other movies, he carefully selected songs for its unforgettable soundtrack.

 

Tarantino directed the movie in a highly stylish³ manner. It is a combination connecting storylines of Los Angeles mobsters, small-time criminals, and a mysterious briefcase⁴. A lot of screen time is devoted⁵ to conversations and monologues⁶ that reveal the different characters' senses of humor and perspectives on life. The film's title refers to the popular magazines and crime novels that were popular during the mid-20th century. They were known for their graphic⁷ violence and dramatic, strong dialogue. Pulp Fiction is viewed as the inspiration for many later movies that adopted various elements of its style. It had a major effect on the field of independent cinema (although it is not an independent film itself).
