Perhaps you've seen this online: your grandparents were called to war, you're being called to sit on your couch¹. You can do this. At exactly this time 75 years ago the US was battling to take control of the island of Iwo Jima. Almost 7,000 Americans lost their lives in more than a month of fighting there. In some ways their time has become our time. Bent² over their sewing machines, our neighbors are making protective³ masks. The Red Cross volunteers of old would smile and the Victory Garden grandma planted to keep veggies on the table.

They are making a comeback too. Our forebears survived the Great Depression and helped win a world war. I pledge⁴ allegiance. Truly it seems not too much to ask that we all, yes all of us, pull together now. E pluribus unum. Out of many, one.
