We are running a series called “A piece of home” devoted1 to people from around the world who’ve had to flee their homes at very short notice. And they talked about what items as they’ve chosen to take with them.

And my “piece of home” is my mother’s saucepan. From this cooking pot I could probably feed 15 people. In 1956 , in South Africa it was the beginning of the treason trial, which was something like 156 anti-apartheid activists2 were arrested and charged with treason. Among them were Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Albert Luthuli and the other big names. And they were put on trial in Pretoria which is where we lived. And there was no provision3 for them to be fed. She used to often pick me up on the way to the court. And we would go to the courthouse and we would feed the people who were on trial. So I was, I mean, in 1956, I was 11. I miss South Africa every day, every day of my life. I left South Africa in 1962. It was very quick because one week I was in South Africa and not thinking about leaving, and the next week I was on a plane toEngland. And my parents followed a year later after my father had been interviewed by the Special Branch. My parents had decided4 earlier that I should leave, because they were, apartheid governed were starting toarrest students who were active. And they were very worried about the possibility of me being in jail. When I left, it was really really awful. I hated leaving. I didn’t think I’d ever been allowed to go back. I didn’t have time to say goodbye to anyone. Sally, stop barking. We have a very large extended family. And I always think about my mother and about those days and about really quiet a little girl.
