The United Nations Development Program has named Malaysia-born actress Michelle Yeoh as a Goodwill Ambassador. She will focus on global development and disaster recovery.
Yeoh experienced the April 2015 earthquake that struck Nepal while visiting the country, and she says it made her want to bring awareness to disaster-recovery efforts. Yeoh also wants to pursue gender-equality and overcome poverty, and welcomes the opportunity to work with UNDP to make a difference.
“I feel really blessed that this opportunity has come up, and I am now able to help to raise further awareness on the issues that are so important, like the eradication of poverty, inequality, discrimination, and climate change. And through UNDP, together with UNDP, I hope that we can make a huge difference and make it a thing of the past,” Yeoh said.
Yeoh is best known for her role as Aung San Suu Kyi in “The Lady,” as well as action-filled parts in “Crouching Tiger” and Bond film “Tomorrow Never Dies.”
