Australia has announced an emergency plan to 1)airlift its citizens out of Indonesia if the political uncertainty1 2)descends into violence. But Australia and other countries in the region are urging Indonesians to find both a peaceful and constitutional way out of the crisis sparked by 3)impeachment proceedings2 against President Abdurrahman Wahid.
Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has urged its big, northern neighbor to find a peaceful 4)resolution to its political problems. Speaking in Singapore, Mr. Downer said it was a matter for the Indonesians themselves and added that Australia could only "politely watch."
Australians in the Indonesian capital were warned early Monday to avoid large public gatherings3 and be aware of the political tensions in Jakarta. The Australian government believes there is not likely to be widespread violence. But if trouble does break out, emergency measures are in place to make sure the 7,000 Australians in Jakarta and up to 10,000 others on the tourist islands of Bali and Lombok stay safe. These emergency procedures were established three years ago by Australian authorities when former Indonesian dictator Suharto was forced to resign.
Foreign Minister Downer says he hopes 5)anarchy can be avoided. "The important thing is that they resolve these political problems not only in a constitutional way but in a peaceful way and that in time they're able to hold on to the democratic gains that Indonesia has made in recent years," he says. "That's the important thing from our 6)perspective."
Japan, one of Indonesia's biggest 7)creditor and aid 8)donors, has 9)echoed Australia's calls for Jakarta to avoid a bloody4 10)confrontation during this period of political uncertainty. Norio Hattori, a spokesman for Japan's Foreign Ministry5, said in a statement that peace in Indonesia was vital for stability in the Asia-Pacific region as a whole. Japanese travelers have been advised not to go to Jakarta unless they have to.
In Hanoi, the annual meeting of the Foreign ministers of the Association of South East Asian Nations has been 11)overshadowed by political turmoil6 in Indonesia, the group's biggest and most 12)volatile member. The ministers have issued a plea for stability but the association's principle of not interfering7 in the affairs of other states means it would not get involved in defusing the crisis.
