 The top stories on ABC News.The Opposition¹ is accusing Kevin Rudd of playing politics over his call for the recognition of indigenous² Australians in the constitution. On the 50th anniversary of the major land rise petition, the prime minister says he wants to see the vote on recognition in the next parliamentary term. But he says Tony Abbott is stalling. Mr Abbott says in principle everyone agrees a referendum is needed and it's Labor³ that's holding the process back.

 

Emergency services are attending an incidence at the US Embassy at Yarraluma in Canberra. A car has crashed into a gate and police and fire crews have blocked off nearby roads. A man is assisting police with their inquiries⁴.

 

One of the Sydney radio hosts behind last year's ill-fated royal prank⁵ is suing her employer. Mel Greg has lodged⁶ an application with FairWork Australia, claiming Southern Cross Austereo failed to maintain a safe workplace. Nurse Jasitha Seldana committed suicide after taking a call from Ms Greg and her fellow presenter⁷.

 

And Australia has won a test, a toss and chosen to bat on day one of the first ashes test against Australia at Trent Bridge. It's a surprise, though, 19-year-old  Ashton Agar has been named to make his debut⁸.
