The prime minister Scott Morrison says Australia has earned the right to have its say on the capital of Israel. He has announced Australia will recognise West Jerusalem as the country's capital but will not move its embassy from Tel Aviv until a peace deal is reached. Mr Morrison says while some have mocked his decision to weigh into the issue, Australia's views are important.

Tropical cyclone¹ Owen weakened as it made landfall in far north Queensland. The state's premier² says there's been little to no damage to remote communities and praised their preparation efforts. The Bureau of Meteorology says heavy rain is forecast as the system tracks east south east.
