Part 1 Types of Shops
First of all, it should be pointed1 out that shops in the western countries are somehow different with those in China. Basically, there are divided into three types: the large-scaled, well-decorated shopping malls and chain shops, the super markets and medium or small sized groceries, and those that exclusively deal with one area, such as books, household appliances, cosmetics2, clothes, furniture, shoes, etc. Besides, there are also many dime3 shops that sell discounted goods.
It should be noted4 that in the United States, there is a kind of shops that are run by the church community who sell various types of goods at the lowest price. These shops are called the Salvation5 Army or Good Will Retailer6 Store. The merchandise here are mostly beneficences, which are marked "used". Frequent customers to these shops are poor people who can't afford expensive goods.
Part 2 Shopping Craze
Dialogue Script
Jack8: Boy, I'm full. Why don't we get a little exercise---go for a walk in the park or something?
Annie: Well, a walk sounds good, but there are no stores in the park.
Jack: Uh-oh...
Annie: And I really feel like going shopping. I hear they're having some great sales at Century City.
Jack: Annie, don't you ever think about anything but clothes? I mean, to me, clothes are just something to put on.
Annie: Yes, and it shows. I think you'd better get a few new things, too——things with a little style.
Jack: Oh, no. I learned a long time ago that I shouldn't try to be trendy. It doesn't suit me.
Annie: But it's fun to be trendy---it gives you a reason to buy more clothes. Anyway I need a dress for the party on Saturday.
Jack: Another dress?
Annie: Hey, this is cute. What do you think?
Jack: Well, it looks great on the mannequin...but it's awfully9 form-fitting, isn't it?
Annie: Are you implying that I need to lose weight to wear this dress?
Jack: I am implying that Audrey Hepurn would need to lose weight to wear this dress.
Annie: Oh, well...I just know that I'm gonna find a terrific bargain today. Hey, this is beautiful. I'm gonna try it on.
Jack: But it's not on sale.
Annie: Well, you get what you pay for, right?
Jack: Annie, you'll be up to your ears in debt if you keep spending so much money.
Annie: No, I won't. I'll just charge it.
I really feel like going shopping. feel like doing sth.
3. 当Annie看上了一件衣服,并问朋友觉得怎么样时,朋友说 ...it looks great on the mannequin...but it's awfully form-fitting.
It's not on sale.
You get what you pay for. 无奈的朋友只好说you'll be up to your ears in debt if you keep spending so much money. up to one's ears in debt
I'll just charge it.
Part 3 Get A Good Buy
The main channel through which customers get merchandise information is advertisement or commercials, and nowadays advertisements are almost everywhere, newspapers, TVs, radios, etc., where the sales information is the most attractive. In the United States, there are two kinds of nationwide sales, the spring sale and summer sale. Besides, there is also the white sale, here you can find whatever you need for bedding.
So if you've decided10 where to buy, you also need to make sure when to buy. The prices of the same goods vary at different season in a year, and we recommend that you pay attention to the useful commercials, especially those about seasonal11 sale and discount ads. These will save you a great deal of money.
Generally, most shops enjoy good reputation and credibility, and they provide excellent service to the customers. In most circumstances, goods can be exchanged or even refunded13 after being sold, of course, they mustn't be used or damaged.
In North American countries, package bags are provided in every shopping mall, super market and grocery as well. So you don't need to carry a bag when you go shopping. And if you do take one, you'll probably make the shop assistants feel unease, they might be doubtful of your intentions.
Dialogue Script
Clerk: May I help you, ma'am?
Anna: Yes, thank you. I'd like to buy a blouse.
Clerk: What colour are you looking for?
Anna: I need something to go with a brown skirt.
Clerk: Here's a pretty green one.
Anna: But it has long sleeves. I'd like a short-sleeved blouse with a high neck, if you have one.
Clerk: We have this one in yellow. What size do you take?
Anna: Thirty-four. Do you have that one in my size?
Clerk: Yes, here it is.
Anna: How much is it?
Clerk: It costs 8 pounds.
Anna: Oh, my. That's too expensive for me. Do you have anything like it for less?
Clerk: I'm afraid not.
Anna: Well, I think I'll look around some more. But I may come back for this one. Thank you.
Clerk: You are welcome.
他们首先会说,May I help you? 或者 What can I do for you?
I need something to go with a brown skirt. go with,在这里是“与…
What size do you take? Do you have anything like it for less? I bought my new car for $20,000.
4. 最后,这位顾客决定再到其它地方看看,look around some more是口语中简便的说法,我们可以理解为look around for some more blouses. You are welcome.
Part 4 Can I Get A Refund12?
Lisa: Excuse me, I want to return this shirt.
Clerk: What's the problem with it?
Lisa: It's too small.
Clerk: Didn't you try it on before you bought it?
Lisa: Well, as a matter of fact, I receive it as a gift.
Clerk: Then you are sure it came from our store?
Lisa: Yes, I am pretty sure. Don't you sell this item?
Clerk: Yes, we do. I'm afraid we don't give a refund, but we can give you credit toward another purchase in our store.
Lisa: No refunds14? Well, in that case, I'll accept the credit.
I'm afraid we can't refund your purchase price.
如果说成“This blender doesn't work. Can you change?” 所以,正确的说法是,“This blender doesn't work. Can you change it?”或者“Can I exchange this blender for another one?”不能说“Can I change for another one?”。再比如“这种电热毯的保修期有多长?”“保修期”英文是“warranty15 period”这句话应该说“How long is the warranty period of these electric blankets?”而不能说成“How long is the warranty period of this electric blanket?”。
就是“I'd like a medium-size blouse.” 的正确说法是“I'll take this scarf. Can you wrap it up for me?”而不要说,“I'll take this scarf. Can you pack it for me?”
