Beth: I love the stuffing¹.

Paul: Are you sure? Not too dry?

Beth: No. It's yummy. Hmm². Did³ you use pecans?

Paul: Yes. It's my mother's recipe⁴. It's probably⁵ a lot different from the stuffing you had⁶ as⁷ a kid⁸.

Beth: Actually⁹,mama and I didn't really celebrate¹¹ Thanksgiving¹³.

Paul: What?

Beth: Daddy left when I was¹⁴ very young. After that, mama said¹⁵ we didn't have anything to be thankful¹⁶ for.

Paul: So you never had people over?

Beth: No. It was always just...Mama and me.

Paul: That's too bad.

Beth: When I was 12, I did ask mama if I could¹⁷ have a friend from school to eat with us. Danny Sullivan. I didn't tell her I'd invited¹⁸ a boy until¹⁹ Thanksgiving morning.

Paul: Well, what happened?

Beth: She started screaming²⁰ at me...saying²¹ boys were only after one thing. When he showed up and knocked²² on the door, she wouldn't let me answer it. We just... sat²⁴ there and ate¹² while²⁵ he knocked and... knocked. Finally²⁶, it stopped.

Paul: Your mother sounds like a very unhappy²⁷ woman.

Beth: I didn't notice²⁸ it so much when I was a child. But now I'm starting to realize²⁹ just how...damaged³⁰ she is.

Paul: Is that why you never introduced³¹ us?

Beth: I just never thought³² you two would²³ have much in common³³.

Paul: I can think of one thing. We both love you.

Beth: You know, I think it's good I waited this long to have a real¹⁰ Thanksgiving.

Paul: Why's that?

Beth: Because now I actually have something to be thankful for.

保罗：那太糟糕了。

贝斯：我12岁的时候，倒是有问过妈妈能不能邀请一位同学来一块吃饭，丹尼·沙利文，我开始没告诉她我邀请的是个男孩，到感恩节早上才说。

保罗：然后呢？

贝斯：她朝我大吼大叫，说男孩都是别有用心的。当他过来敲门的时候，她不让我开门，我们就那么坐在那吃饭。而他一直敲门，一直敲，最后，终于停了。

保罗：你母亲听起来好像不是太开心啊。

贝斯：我小时候没注意过这么多，而现在我才开始意识到，她有多扭曲。

保罗：所以你才没让我去拜访她？

贝斯：我只是觉得你们俩可能不会有太多共同语言。

保罗：我能想到一点，我们都很爱你。

贝斯：我等了这么长时间，才过了一个真正的感恩节，这是件好事。

保罗：为什么这么说？
