1. Hurricane Matthew's torrential rains triggered severe flooding in North Carolina as the storm made its exit to sea. Thousands of people had to be rescued from their homes and cars. The death toll¹ in the U.S climbed to 16.

2. New York's governor says a work train and a commuter² train "side-swiped" one another, causing a derailment that injured 33 people Saturday night. Governor Andrew Cuomo says a train doing a maintenance works somehow violated the clearance³ space of a Long Island railroad train.

3. The man being charged with killing⁴ two Palm Spring Police officers Saturday and shooting a third could face the death penalty. Court records show 26-year old John Felix was a gay member who served time previously⁵ for a failed murder plot.

4. And hours before the second presidential debate, Donald Trump⁶ lashed⁷ out the growing list of republicans that are abandoning his candidacy, calling them"Self-righteous hypocrites , and predicting they are the ones who will lose". The mass exodus⁸ of support for Trump follows the release of a video in which he made lewd⁹ remarks about women.
